Why This Day Matters

The United Nations set aside 12 August for young people back in 1999. Since then, the day has grown into a global moment for youth voices. This year, the UN theme is Different Contexts, Common Aspirations. The idea is simple. Young people grow up in very different places, yet they want the same things — dignity, good schools, real work, and a say in decisions that shape their lives.

Kenya has one of the youngest populations in the world. However, too many young people still face closed doors. Jobs are scarce. Skills training is uneven. Digital access is not equal. Therefore, a day of dialogue is not enough on its own. We also need practical follow-through, and that is what we are planning for.

Our Theme: Technology and Partnerships

Our local theme for International Youth Day 2026 is Youth Advancing Multilateral Cooperation Through Technology and Partnerships. It sits close to the UN sub-theme of global solidarity. In short, no single group can fix youth unemployment alone. Schools, county government, community groups, and private business all have a part to play.

Technology makes that cooperation possible. A young person in Keroka can now learn a skill online, join a global network, and sell a service across borders. For example, digital freelancing already supports thousands of Kenyan youth. So our focus is on turning that access into real income and real influence.

We have built a short, practical programme. Because the session ends at 1:00 pm, every slot has a clear purpose.
